The DSJV was recognized with two awards in the 24th annual Rockower awards ceremony tonight in Boston. The Rockowers are the highest honor in the Jewish newspaper industry.

DSJV received first place in newswriting for papers under 15,000 in circulation for the January 2004 story, 'Salvaging Holiday Spirit in Mobile'. The story was about a controversy that erupted when Mobile's secular Christmas parade added Chanukah and Kwanzaa floats and changed the parade's name to be more inclusive. The resulting outcry by some who felt that Christmas was being eliminated for political correctness led to the temporary cancellation of the parade. In this category, DSJV competes with publications from much larger markets, such as Washington, Cleveland, Denver and Atlanta.

DSJV also received third place in overall excellence for smallest circulation papers. This is the final year that DSJV is eligible for this award, since our current circulation is larger than the award's cutoff.

In the last eleven years, DSJV has received ten Rockower awards. The awards are presented by the American Jewish Press Association.
