ZAKA, which is better known as the group that retrieves bodies after terror attacks in Israel, is on the ground in New Orleans.
According to Isaac Lieder, a ZAKA member now in Baton Rouge, the organization has already retrieved two bodies from New Orleans, and there are reports of four more deceased. One of the deceased was a former gabbai at a New Orleans congregation, and the second was an elderly woman originally from Long Island.
ZAKA reports that the Jews who died in New Orleans were elderly, and may have had existing conditions that were exacerbated by the conditions after the hurricane.
The organization is also trying to get to Beth Israel Synagogue, which is believed to still be flooded and have eight Torahs inside.
